Why Do Some Professionals Get Overlooked for Strategic Positions?

strategic
My organisation values me and appreciates what I do in the current role. However when opportunities for the next role comes, I am not perceived as the first in the list of potentials. While people think I am good for the current job, they don't have the confidence that I am good for the next strategic position which is Director & above. What can I do to change the perception in my favour?

When someone is not considered for the next level strategic position, some or all of the below reasons could be true:

Fig 1: Why do some Professionals Get Overlooked for Strategic Positions?

The most important reflection that you need to do after a missed opportunity is to find in what way you contribute into it instead of wishing it away saying "these grapes are sour". The thought patterns that inhibit you are:

  • There is too much office politics. Only those who play, win.

  • Who you know is more important that who you are. I am not good in networking.

  • I am not a yes man to my boss, so can't get promoted etc

While some of it could be subjectively true, believing solely in them and waiting to get promoted, sulking till you get there is not a great use of your intelligence or your time.

If you really want to be considered for the next strategic role

  1. Find what it takes

  2. Address the gap

  3. Demonstrate readiness

  4. Continuously sharpen your saw.
