Where are my wings?

I am born with potential

I am born with goodness

I am born with ideas and dreams

I am born with wings.

So I am not meant for crawling because I have wings.

I will fly, I will fly, I will fly….

Those were the beautiful words of Dr Abdul Kalam, Ex President of India, to Hyderabad school children in 2012. Apple has shot a beautiful video with his voice in the background.

Having been a long time admirer of Dr Kalam and his work, I had goosebumps when I heard his voice in this ad on TV, after so many years. That prompted me to write this.

When children repeat after him, there is not an iota of doubt about what they are saying.

They say it with conviction.

As we grow up, somehow our wings are forgotten.

We begin to crawl.

We can blame it on anyone or any situation as we want.

But ultimately, we cannot say someone else forgot our wings and dreams, isn’t it?

You may have wings, fins, legs - whatever, are your gifts.

They are there for your happiness.

And one day if you strive beyond, they will be for others in ways that you can’t imagine.

In my coaching sessions - people from age group 25-60 ask for outcomes.

Quite fair - no judgements.

When I ask them - what makes your heart fly?

It’s like somebody removed the chains off them or they suddenly got their wings from hiding. They feel free to fly. I always wonder - Who is this person in front of me?

Sometimes it’s about just flying, isn’t it? You don’t know where you will go with it. Flying is enough.

Why? Because flying shows you your potential, flying shows you your goodness, flying shows you your ideas and dreams, flying shows you your wings, flying makes you happy.

So how do you find your wings?

Dig deep into yourself - the box where you have stored your childhood dreams.

Take them one by one. Find the ones you still like.

What is the one step you can do today to realise them?

You may not be able to go on a sortie in a supersonic jet with the world media covering your journey.

However, that one step will remind you that you have wings.

That one step will give you happiness.

From that state emerges possibility.

Hidden in that possibility are your outcomes.

“We are all born with a divine fire in us. Our efforts should be to give wings to this fire and fill the world with the glow of its goodness.” A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Wings of Fire
