Many professionals pursue career goals with a zeal, only to find out later that they are unfulfilled still.
One of the reasons is they don't take the time to reflect on:
Why they want what they want?
The hidden reasons behind our wants, could be some needs that need to be fulfilled.
That is the actual force behind your career goals.
The needs could be Power, Recognition, Compensation, Status, Impact etc.
While many will say I want all, at various points in our life, we tend to value different things.
Why does it help to know your need at this point ?
It helps to prioritise on values. At this point in my life, which of my needs do I value the most? Which of them are negotiable? This helps to make decisions on -
Which career moves I will make?
Where I will trade-off?
Is the corner office that important now?
Is it a balance what I need now?
I want all the 5. Does that justify my career focus/extended hours?
2. It helps to shift the locus of control back to you.
Most people feel unfulfilled because their career path doesn't match someone else's ! However that's a recipe for being forever miserable.
Fulfilment = Self-assessment (Have I met my prioritised need?)
You are in the drivers seat of your own career.
You don't need to run a rat-race.
3. It helps you to articulate yourself in the best possible way because it de-clutters your mind. At Senior Leadership levels this is one of the biggest strengths - to see oneself and their work with clarity. What need drives you? What will you prioritise?
